Puerto Vallarta Provides A Perfect Assortment Of Incredible Beaches

For years, beaches have been Puerto Vallarta's primary draw. Approximately 26 miles of beaches extend around the Bay of Banderas, including action-packed party spots to secluded coves reachable only by boat.

In Town -- The easiest to reach is Playa Los Muertos, just south of the Rio Cuale. The waves can tend to be challenging, but the wide beach has a diverse array of palapa restaurants offering food, and beach-chair service. The most popular are the neighboring El Dorado and La Palapa, at the end of Pulpito Street. Merchants stroll Los Muertos, and volleyball, para-sailing, and jet-skiing are all common pastimes. The Hotel Zone may also be known for its broad, white sand, beaches reachable mainly through the hotel lobbies.

South of Town -- Playa Conchas Chinas, one of the best beaches in Vallarta, is referred to as "The Beverly Hills of Puerto Vallarta" for its elite luxury villas and condos. These spectacular, Puerto Vallarta villas are well-known for offering the most luxury at a, surprisingly, affordable price. Only one mile away from the city, Conchas Chinas also offers fabulous beaches with areas of white sand separated by rocky outcroppings, and crystal blue waters featuring the vibrant marine life.

Playa Mismaloya lies in a beautiful protected cove about six miles south of town along Highway 200. The water is clear and exquisite, great for snorkeling off of the beach. Access to the public beach is just to the left of the Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya.

The beach at Boca de Tomatlan, just down the road, has numerous palapa restaurants where you can unwind for the day -- you buy drinks, snacks, or a meal, and they allow you to use the chairs and palapa shade. Las Animas, Quimixto, and Yelapa beaches will offer you a true sense of seclusion; and are reachable solely by boat. They are larger than Mismaloya, will offer you intriguing hikes, horseback riding to waterfalls, and are similarly set up with restaurants along a beautiful beach. Overnight accommodations are available at Yelapa.

North of Town -- Most of the northern coastline from Bucerias to Punta Mita is a chain of sandy coves alternating with rocky inlets. For years the beaches to the north, with lengthy, clean breaks, happen to have been the favored area for surfing. The broad sandy stretches at Playa Anclote, Playa Piedras Blancas, and Playa Destiladeras, all with palapa restaurants, have made them popular among residents searching for an easy getaway. At Playa Anclote you'll also discover a broad sandy beach with protected swimming areas, plus a few great palapa restaurants.

The beautiful white-sand beach at Punta Mita, home to the Four Seasons, and Punta Mita Private Villas, is closed to road access, with the exception of owners and visitors of this residential resort development. You can rent a panga (small motor-driven boat) on Playa Anclote and have the captain take you to the Marietas Islands just offshore. These uninhabited islands are a fantastic place for birdwatching, diving, snorkeling, or just exploring. Blue-footed booby birds (discovered only here, and in the Galapagos) are often seen all along the islands' rugged coast, as well as giant mantas, sea turtles, and colorful tropical fish swim amidst the coral cliffs. The islands are honeycombed with caves and private beaches--including the beautiful Playa de Amor that only arises at low tide. Humpback whales congregate throughout these islands during the winter months. You can also visit these islands on board one of the many daily cruises which depart from the cruise-ship terminal. Lastly, Puerto Vallarta beaches can fulfill a variety of expectations from one extreme to another.
