The city of Cambridge is found in the south eastern part of Waterloo Region and has a population of right around 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of the towns of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local people resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" pushed on them by the Province of Ontario.
Today The Waterloo area is right up there with the most vibrant and diverse areas in Canada because it has some of the best agricultural land in Ontario, two well respected Universities, a strong financial and insurance sector, diversified industrial production and a rapidly expanding high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and numerous spinoff companies from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
