In the first place, the main manufacturers of clone golf clubs are true golf companies in their own rights. Their own design departments produce club designs that are manufactured using the same materials as the big OEM's. These golf clubs include the same design principles such as club volume, increased moment of inertia and cavity backs, to name just a few.
The rules of golf lay down strict limits when it comes to club design. Club heads have to abide by these rules, otherwise they are deemed non-conforming and prohibited for use in competitive play. That's not only at the top levels of the game. Playing a non-conforming driver in your next club match may well see you being disqualified.
The top manufacturers of golf clones will submit their clubs to the game's governing bodies for approval (USPGA in the USA, R&A in Europe) exactly like the big OEM's do. This takes time, resources and is very expensive so nobody making cheapo fakes is going to invest that kind of time and money on submitting clubs, only to see them rejected.
Take titanium drivers for example. The maximum volume allowed under the rules of golf is 460 cc for the club to be conforming. It's not enough for a maker to claim their drivers are no bigger than 460 cc. The USPGA and the R&A have to confirm they aren't. If drivers do come in under the limit, they go on the Conforming Driver lists. If they are bigger then the allowed maximum, they are listed on the Non-Conforming Driver lists.
Quick note here. Some suppliers of second-rate knock-offs proudly proclaim their drivers are conforming pointing to the fact that their drivers are not on the non-conforming lists. All that translates to is that they haven't submitted their clubs for testing. If a club conforms, it's on the conforming list. Just because a drivers is on the conforming list, it isn't necessarily conforming.
Creating conforming clubs takes a lot of attention and a lot of manufacturing skill. The limits placed by the rules are very strict and it only takes a tiny manufacturing discrepancy to end up with non-conforming clubs. Size isn't the only limit the rules make. With restrictions on club-face recovery for example (COR or Coefficient of Restitution) being affected by even a tiny deviation in thickness of the driver face, quality control is crucial.
Clone clubs from the top manufacturers built according to the rules of golf and will make a much smaller dent in your wallet. Using the same quality materials as the big golf companies and with the same (or better) shafts, these are top quality golf clubs that will make your game that much more enjoyable. As an added bonus, many of the top line manufacturers offer custom build options on their clubs.
What you end up playing is a set of top quality, conforming, custom built clubs that will perform as good as, and usually a whole lot better, than a set of high-priced off-the-rack OEM's. And all that without the price tags.
