An African safari is not complete devoid of taking a ride on a hot air-driven balloon.
In 1976, Alan Root and his wife Joan- wildlife film makers, used a hot air balloon to take movie clips of wild animals. It was quicker, to use the balloon to reach spots where a car could not reach, to film gorgeous aerials of wildlife.
From then on, the idea Elicited the interest of visitors who were ready to pay top-dollar for this once in a lifetime sensation. This gave birth to balloon safaris in Kenya Tanzania safaris.
Its daybreak in the Masai Mara. The blanket of darkness is however heavy on the dawn and makes the red orange flame from the burner of the hot-air balloon radiate vividly bright.
As the sun emerges from behind the mountains, the 100-foot tall balloon is afloat above the Masai Mara plains with all of us lodged in a woven basket mounted on the massive balloon.

Adrift, we have a vantage eagle's eye view of the vastness of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti Parks extending as far as the eye can perceive. It appears endless.
We take 90 degrees turn and below we spot the tops of the heads of giraffes through the cover of acacia trees as they feed on the foliage, scarcely noticing us drifting in the air above.
After 1 hour adrift, the journey ends with a bouncy landing bringing us back to the ground. Here we crawl out of the basket to a champagne breakfast. The magnificence is that this breakfast happens in the bush, wherever you land, and it's prepared as you see with the burners that moments before kept you suspended in the air. What a way to start our day!

"Something that amazes most first-time balloonists is the utter stillness, the peace as you sail above the savanah, the forest and the rivers of the Masai Mara. The sounds below drift clearly upwards: a lion's roar, elephants crashing through the bush, baboons perched on the tops of the trees. If you're fortunate you will soar high above for the view of a lifetime. " the captain offers.
After the end year rains, the grass is lush green as we drive back to our camp viewing wildlife en-route. It is such a contrast as these are the same plains which, in November, were golden, dried out and hash.
Suddenly we come across a mother cheetah marking her tree, spraying the area with urine. Finished, she checks our company and then makes a soft tweeting sound as she makes her way through the grass. Perhaps she is looking for her litter.
The plains are swarming with elephants, buffaloes, topi, wildebeests and other antelopes and the sight is just wonderful.
