Acer, the computer giant., no slouch when it comes to competing in the personal computer space, have announced their plans to enter the ebook book reader arena later on this year.
Acer senior manager Jim Wong, leader of the company's IT Products group, outlined the plans through an interview with Bloomberg at Acer's HQ in Taipei.
On the eve of Apple's alleged entrance into the tablet sweeps-a model that would serve e-book readers in addition to others-Wong also said the company will also offer "hundreds" of apps online, programs which will sustain Google's Android program, at this time running on more than a few Acer products, as well as supporting Microsoft's Windows OS.
By July, Acer will be expected to announce an electronic-book reader with a 150 mm monochrome screen, Mr. Wong told Bloomberg. "Amazon and Barnes & Noble; they are American. In Western Europe and Australasia we have publishers to work with, and nearly everyone of them are subject matter owners," he maintained. Acer would go up against devices including the Kindle , B&N Inc.'s Nook and Sony's Reader and so it will be easy to compare ebook reader models.
Acer also has the Apple "iSlate"-when it appears-to contend with. "We're developing something, and we will see what happens" J.T. Wang, Acer's president, said in the commentary. "We are sure to work either in the Windows world or in Google's distinct OS space."
